Al Taqaddum * Two US marines are killed in an accident. Baghdad * Two US pilots are killed when their helicopter is hit with a surface to air missile. * One passenger in a convoy of US police trainers is killed in a roadside bomb attack. Ramadi * A university professor and a tribal leader are shot dead by gunmen. Musayib * Three civilians are wounded by a roadside bomb targeting an Iraqi police patrol. Muqdadiyah * Five Iraqi policemen and a 12-year-old child are killed and 18 others wounded by a car bomb. January 17 Kirkuk * Four gunmen storm the offices of the Independent Electoral Commission of Iraq and fire randomly at employees, killing one and wounding another. * One person is killed and two others wounded when four gunmen fire on the headquarters of the Kurdistan Workers Party. * Two policemen are wounded by a roadside bomb. January 18 Baghdad * Ten security guards are killed and two African engineers are kidnapped when gunmen ambush a convoy of telecommunications workers. Balad Ruz * tInsurgents attack the home of an Iraqi policeman with rocket-propelled grenades, killing the officer's children, aged six to 11, and their uncle. Basra * Two US civilians are killed and a third is seriously wounded by a roadside bomb targeting a convoy of private security contractors. Iskandariya * Two policemen are killed and four others wounded when gunmen attack a police station. Sadiya * Three policemen and one civilian are killed by a roadside bomb targeting a police patrol. January 19 Baghdad * Twenty-three people are killed and dozens more wounded simultaneously when a car bomb hits a police patrol and a suicide bomber walks into a coffee shop and blows himself up. * Three insurgents are killed by Iraqi army soldiers after an attack on a military checkpoint. Dujail * At least 30 people are taken from their cars at makeshift insurgent checkpoints and shot dead execution style. Tarmiya * Thirty-five police recruits are abducted by insurgents who leave at least 14 dead. January 20 Baghdad * Two civilians are killed and three wounded by a roadside bomb targeting a US patrol. * Seven people are wounded by a car bomb targeting a police patrol. Haqlaniya * Two US soldiers are killed by a suicide bomber. * A police commando is shot dead by gunmen. * A former Baath Party member is found shot dead execution style in a playground. Hawija * Four US soldiers are killed by a roadside bomb. Miqdadia * One policeman is killed and four others wounded by a roadside bomb targeting their patrol. Mussayib * Police detain five insurgents trying to launch rockets. January 21 Baghdad * One person is killed and two seriously wounded by a car bomb near a crowded market. * One policeman is killed and another wounded by a roadside bomb. Baquba * Two policemen are killed and six wounded by a car bomb targeting their patrol. Dujail * An engineer working in a US military base is killed by gunmen. Tuz Khurmatu * Five people are wounded when a roadside bomb strikes the motorcade of President Jalal Talabani's staff. January 22 Baiji * US soldiers kill three men who they say had shot at their patrol, but Iraqi police say were innocent civilians who had been driving by when the patrol opened fired after being struck by a roadside bomb. Baquba * Four policemen are killed and nine wounded by a roadside bomb. Hawija * Three policemen are wounded by a roadside bomb. Minzila * A tribal leader and his son are found shot dead several hours after being kidnapped. Mosul * Four Iraqi policemen are wounded by a roadside bomb.
