Pro-Palestinians take to the street

Thousands of demonstrators around the world hit the streets Saturday–from Toronto to Istanbul–to denounce the Israeli raid last week on a Gaza-bound flotilla. In Toronto, hundreds gathered around 1 p.m. on the south side of Bloor St. W. near the Royal Ontario Museum. There had been a similar protest Friday. They initially gathered behind police barricades on the south side by the Royal Ontario Museum, waving Palestinian and Turkish flags and protest signs. On the north side of Bloor, in front of the Israeli consulate, a smaller group of pro-Israel supporters set up a counter-protest, defending the Gaza blockade. An hour later the pro-Gaza protesters marched to Yonge-Dundas Square, where they rallied well into the afternoon.
